Shanghai boasts one of the best transportation systems in China. As a major port city and the largest city in Eastern China, this is the major hub for the eastern region.
By Air: There are direct flights to many international cities from Shanghai. Shanghai is the only city in China that has two international airports.
Pudong International Airport (PVG) is the new international airport, it handles 60% of flights including most flights from all over the world, while the remaining 40% use Hongqiao International Airport (SHA)-the old one.
PVG is situated in the east of Shanghai, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) away from the city center and 40 kilometers (25 miles) from SHA. SHA is located in the west of Shanghai, 15 km from the city center. Transfer from the two airports is very easy since there are so many airport buses, taxi can take you to the destination. Also, you can try Maglev in PVG, it is the fastest way for you to reach your destination.
As one of the main Chinese airline hubs, Shanghai has opened connection with nearly two hundred cities, half domestic ones and half international and regional ones. Direct flights connect Shanghai to dozens of international air terminals such as Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Brussels, Madrid, Paris, London, Rome, Moscow, Fukuoka, Osaka, Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore, and so on as well as regional links with Hong Kong and Macau. Domestic flights link Shanghai with Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xian, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang, etc
By Train: There are three railway stations in Shanghai: Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai West Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station. Shanghai Railway Station serves as the main passenger station among the three stations. Everyday 70 or so pairs of trains run between other cities all over the country. Shanghai West Railway Station serving routes between Shanghai and Yantai, Zaozhuang, Hengyang, Ganzhou, Chengdu. Round trips between Shanghai South Railway Station and Hangzhou, Jiashan, Jinshan, etc.
Shanghai is in the centre of an important rail network and there are daily trains to Xian (17 hours), Beijing (14 hours), Kunming(36 hours), Guilin(26 hours), Qingdao(16-20 hours) and almost all capital cities from which tourists can choose further transportation to their destination. There is also a train to Kowloon in Hongkong(26 hours). Regular services to Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Wuxi are available.
For foreigners, train tickets can be bought in the ticket booking office in the soft seat waiting room. Most hotels also handle this business, but it is subject to service charge.

By Bus:
Shanghai boasts the most established highway system in China. Express ways has been constructed to link all the nearby provinces. The main long distance bus station is near the train station on Qiujiang Road. Buses from here head to Nanjing (4 hours), Wuxi, Suzhou, Hangzhou and other cities. There is also a new bus station servicing Shaoxing, Ningbo,Yangzhou and Hangzhou.
Some main coach stations are as follows:
1. Hengfeng Road Passenger Station---Shanghai Long-distance Transport Company
Located at No. 270, Hengfeng Road, Shanghai, this station provides buses to Suzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wuxi, Nanjing, Jiujiang, Wuhan, Beijing and Jiaxing, etc.
2. Long-distance Shortcut Passenger Station---Shanghai Public Coach Transportation Co., Ltd.
Located at No. 605, Hutai Road, Shanghai, this bus station links with Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Ningbo, Nanjing, Zhenjiang, Lianyugang, Hefei, etc.
3. Shanghai Coach Station---Shanghai Transportation Co., Ltd.
Situated at No. 1015, Zhongshan North Road, buses are bound for Yantai, Qingdao, Rizhao, Yangzhou, Ma'anshan, Wuhu, Shaoxing, etc. In addition, buses to Mt. Huangshan, Mt. Jiuhuashan and Wuzhen can be found here.
4. Jiaotong Dazhong Transportation Center---Shanghai Jiaotong Dazhong Passenger Transport Co., Ltd.
Located at No. 168, Taopu Road, it offers coaches to Nanjing, Hefei, Huai'an, Ma'anshan, Zhenjiang, Changzhou, Wuxi, Wuhan, Suzhou, etc.
By Sea:
Shanghai, for its geographic location, is the world's third largest port and China's largest seaport.
Ships sailing from Shanghai Port voyage to about 400 foreign ports. Shiliu Pu Dock has regular ships for neighboring areas like Nantong City, Dinghai City and Mt. Putuoshan area. Shanghai Changjiang (Yangtze River) Shipping Corporation provides ships to Chongqing, Nanjing and Wuhan.
For international travel boat , it links with Incheon and Pusan ports of South Korea and Osaka and Kobe ports of Japan, starting from Wai Hongqiao Dock. Ship schedules can vary according to the weather conditions and up to date information can be obtained by phoning 021-63261261.
